Haitian anthropology student FREDA must navigate the tensions between family expectations, postcolonial structures, Christianity, and voodoo.
While FREDA is dedicated to emancipation and fighting corruption, her siblings have chosen other strategies to escape poverty. Her sister Esther is trying to find a solvent husband, while her brother Moïse wants to leave the country.
The eponymous main character, FREDA, is named after a female voodoo guardian spirit who is invoked in matters of romantic love, protection from poisons and evil magic, as well as for attaining wealth.
"The outstanding debut offers an eloquent voice for a troubled nation. establishes herself as an important voice for another under-represented community." (Tilt Goombastomp)
