Between 1880 and 1960, hundreds of Luxembourgers moved to the Belgian Congo to live and work there; some only for a short while, others for ever. The film briefly evokes the great chronological landmarks in the history of the Belgian Congo, but most of the commentary is provided by eight of these former colonials who recall the memories of their stay in Africa, especially in the 50s. They talk of why they are left, travel to and first contact with the Congo, their work in the colony, family life, relations with Africans and finally the revolts for independence which, for most of them, meant precipitous departure.
