During the Depression, Jimmy Gralton returns home to Ireland after ten years of exile in America. He looks to reopen the dance hall that led to his deportation. Jimmy was notorious as a communist and carries "reprehensible jazz records" in his luggage. He wants to bring these closer to his friends and acquaintances in a freshly dusted dance hall. The people are enthusiastic, their solidarity grows. Which is a thorn in the side of the church on the one hand, and a source of concern to the authorities on the other: They fear a nucleus of resistance. So laws are bent to expel Jimmy from the country.
