Goldsmith Vittorio (Vitaliano Trevisan) is obsessed with slender bodies and is looking for an extremely thin woman to model his golden figures. He meets model Sonia and woos her until he succeeds in persuading her to lose more and more weight. Matteo Garrone's erotic body horror film focuses on the torture of a young woman by her partner. Vittorio (Vitaliano Trevisan) is a restless character. He works as a goldsmith and is looking for the woman who fits his ideals, whom he can mold just like his jewelry. Ideal means she must be extremely thin. Through an ad, he meets Sonia, a likeable, intelligent woman who has only one flaw in his eyes: at 57 kg, she is too heavy. Right from their first meeting, he tells her that she is not thin enough for his ideals. She stays anyway, and little by little, the first signs that the matter is not yet settled creep into the superficial idyll of the couple. PRIMO AMORE premiered in competition at the 2004 Berlinale, where it caused a sensation with its uncompromising portrayal and emotional power. Garrone received widespread praise for his direction, and the film won the Silver Bear for outstanding music by Banda Osiris. In addition, PRIMO AMORE received the Nastro d'Argento for Best Cinematography in Italy and was nominated for several David di Donatello Awards. With its unflinching honesty and consistent cinematic style, the film is considered one of Garrone's most important contributions before his international breakthrough with Gomorrah.
