Through 56 independent scenes, Echo draws a kaleidoscopic portrait, both biting and tender, of modern day Iceland during the Christmas holidays. Portraying protagonists from all walks of life, like funeral directors, migrants, school children, emergency services phone operators or grandparents, these carefully arranged capsules form a complex portrayal of the Icelandic society and by extension of humanity as a whole. Although those vignettes stand alone, they are connected by common themes, such as rising social inequality, the impact of modern technology on traditional ways of life, the drabness of winter and its impact on the country’s collective mental health.
