Carmen and Lola

In the suburbs of Madrid, a young woman lives in a traditional Roma community. Like many around her, she is destined to marry early and start a family. But when she meets a woman of the same age who dreams of a different life and is attracted to women, a tender love story develops between the two. This relationship presents her with the challenge of choosing between her love and the strict expectations of her culture. The film CARMEN & LOLA by Spanish director Arantxa Echevarría tells the moving story of two young Roma women who discover their love for each other in a conservative community. With gripping performances by leading actresses Rosy Rodríguez and Zaira Romero, the film highlights the conflicts between tradition and personal freedom. CARMEN & LOLA premiered at the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section. The film received numerous awards, including the Violette d'Or for best film at the Festival Cinespaña in Toulouse in 2018, as well as the 2019 Goya Award for best new director and best supporting actress.
