Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts), both in their mid-40s, are married and live in Brooklyn. They're not doing too badly, but they still find their lives rather dull. While their friends are gradually welcoming offspring into the world, the two still want to enjoy their childless freedom. This attitude is reinforced when one day they meet Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), a hipster couple twenty years their junior, with whom they quickly become friends. The younger couple's energy, informality and openness fascinate their new, older friends and make them feel young again themselves. But the more time the four spend together, the more obvious the differences between them become, which soon put a strain on their young friendship and make Josh and Cornelia think even more about their views on life and growing older.
