When Charley discovers his favourite is bound for slaughter, they leave together to search for a loving aunt Charley has not seen in years. Charley Thompson, 15, arrives in Portland, Oregon with his father Ray, both of them eager for a fresh start. While Ray descends into personal turmoil, Charley finds acceptance at a local racetrack where he cares for an aging Horse named Lean On Pete. When he discovers that Pete is bound for slaughter, Charley and Pete head out across the American frontier in search of his loving aunt.
