Séraphine

Yolande Moreau is an uneducated and devout housekeeper who at night creates boldly original paintings. Real Moreau is now considered one of the most significant naive painters. Séraphine Louis aka Séraphine de Senlis (Yolande Moreau) worked as a cook and housekeeper in an affluent French country home in the early 1900s. In her off-hours Séraphine painted pictures of her rural environment. Having only the scantest materials at hand, she created pigments from elements such as animal blood, oil from church candles, and earth. In 1912 Wilhelm Uhde (Ulrich Tukur), a German art critic and collector, discovered the self-taught artist's paintings while she worked for him as a maid in his lodgings in Senlis outside Paris.
