Tom Tykwer was born in Wuppertal in 1965 and has been working as a director, screenwriter, and composer since the early 1990s. He has developed a style that combines strong visual concepts with precise musical structures. His work ranges from independent cinema to international co-productions and has shaped German film and television for several decades.
WIE ICH LERNTE, DIE ZAHLEN ZU LIEBEN (How I Learned to Love Numbers) was released in 2014, directed by Oliver Sechting and Max Taubert. Tykwer appears in the film as an interview partner and complements the perspectives of the film with his own experiences from creative processes. Das Parfum – Die Geschichte eines Mörders (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) from 2006 was directed by him and is one of his most internationally renowned projects. Run Lola Run was released in theaters in 1998 and became one of his most important successes, receiving worldwide attention and numerous awards. The series Babylon Berlin launched in 2017 and was developed by Tykwer together with Achim von Borries and Henk Handloegten. He took on the roles of director, screenwriter, and part of the music design.
Throughout his career, Tykwer has received several awards, including honors at the German Film Awards and the Bavarian Film Awards. His films have been screened at international festivals and won awards in various countries, strengthening his position as one of the most influential German filmmakers.
