TRALALA is an unconventional, melancholic and humorous musical about identity, longing and the art of self-deception. Tralala, a homeless musician, travels through France with his guitar until he ends up in the pilgrimage town of Lourdes – a place between spiritual promise, tourist kitsch and everyday banality. In this strangely disenchanted world, TRALALA uses a chance mix-up to create a new identity for himself. What begins as a playful masquerade quickly becomes an emotional balancing act between closeness and lies, past and ideal. Between bars, street music and religious souvenirs, he finds himself in a fragile web of relationships that forces him to grapple with guilt, loss and the question of who he really wants to be. Mathieu Amalric embodies Tralala with great ease and quiet melancholy – as a charismatic outsider who sings more than he explains. The musical numbers arise organically from everyday life and move freely between chanson, pop and absurd fantasy. Amalric is supported by a striking ensemble, including Denis Lavant as his eccentric musical counterpart. With subtle humour and surreal accents, Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu tell a heart-warming story about transformation and self-staging.
